Justin Craig - R.I.P.

During March Moen Glass and the industry lost a friend and valuable colleague in Justin Craig. Justin had been with Moen Glass for over 5 years and at only 25 years old, was capitalising on the opportunities being presented and had become a pivotal person within our organisation.

Justin was lost to a car accident that reminds us all how fragile life is. His funeral and wake were a fitting celebration to the life of “Knuckles”. The manner in which the people at Moen Glass rallied around his family and colleagues and ensured that life went on for the sake of the customers was a real credit to them. It is not an understatement to say that Justin influenced all areas of Moen Glass. He worked through all areas of the business, including a 12 month stint in Canberra and he made many friends. Justin will never be forgotten.

Canberra Update

I write this to you from sunny Mitchell. The autumn mornings in Canberra are getting a bit frigid, but it’s a beautiful time of year in the capital.

Glenn Walsh joins us as Factory Manager and he joins Adam, Aaron and the boys in refocusing our efforts in the Canberra and regional areas. This focus will help us give a level of service unseen in the Canberra region before at a critical time when energy legislation is taking hold and plenty of buildings are going up.

Joey is the dedicated customer service person for you in this area and she is adding enormously to our personalised service approach. Call Joey anytime on 1300 768 024 to place an order or chat about your needs. Our leadtimes have never been lower and now is a great time to test Moen Glass with all your double glazing and toughened needs.

Oh, and I’m up here as well (Vic Moen) so feel free to call up and make a time for a coffee. Cheers!

Project Profile

185-191 Liverpool Rd, Kilsyth

Moen Glass has recently supplied Insulglass for an Office/warehouse project which will accommodate Ace Tree Management and Ace Energy Services.

This is one of the few projects of this type that has recognised the major benefits in utilising energy efficient glass as a part of the building. Moen Glass Tempershield/Insulglass units were used with a makeup of  6mm Arctic Blue Eclipse Advantage, 12mm air space and 6mm clear. This make up has a u value of 1.96 and a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.29.

This means that the windows, originally specified as 6.38mm clear laminated, now perform 66% better in an insulation sense. This will reduce the need for artificial heating and cooling significantly. It will also further reduce the solar heat gain compared to 6.38mm laminated glass by 51%, which is very important because the main façade faces west and solar heat gain would have been a major issue with clear laminated glass.

The aesthetics of the building and the sound insulation performance are also significantly improved which is important because the building is on a major road.

I spoke to Matthew Calvi one of the managing directors of Ace Tree Management and Ace Energy Services and he commented on the building.

“We wanted a comfortable environment for our staff and to reduce the cost of ongoing energy use”.

When Matthew first approached his builder, V&B Concreting, and asked that insulated glass units be included in the building, the automatic response was, “what do you want that for? It costs more than double, how about I just put some thicker glass in?”.

So surprise, surprise, there is still a lack of knowledge in the building industry. Luckily Matthew knows a little about energy efficiency. His business Ace Energy Services are involved in all types of street lighting maintenance and installations so he is exposed to energy efficient lighting. Matthew pushed on with his builder and in the process also educated him on the importance of energy efficient glazing.

Due to the installation of Moen Insulglass units, the air conditioning/heating units were significantly reduced from the size that were initially designed and this offset the extra cost of the glass.

Other things that have been included in the project are water tanks that hold 44,000 litres, insulation to walls and ceilings and T5 energy efficient lighting to office and warehouse areas.

Moen worked very closely with the builder and made sure the project ran smoothly from order to delivery of IGU’s.

Mathew believes with the small amount of extra investment in the building when compared with your run of the mill office/factory, they will benefit with increased value in the future of the building -  whether for resale or leasing.

Mathew is also excited about moving into the new building and really enjoying the feel of the building. He knows the comfort of the building will add to the staff’s wellbeing and make it a special place to work.
